Representative Helland,

I am writing to you today to urge that you vote against HJR6. Iowans soundly rejected modifying our Constitution last November and adding this discriminatory text would be a stain on a document that ensures liberty for all.

I am marrying the woman of my dreams five months from tomorrow. We want to be able to look our gay friends in the eye that day. You represent gay Iowans who pay taxes, create jobs and serve in our military. Denying them these rights is just flat wrong.

I attended the public hearing on HJR6 last night. All but two of the speakers in support of HJR6 brought up the Biblical definition of marriage. As you know, the decision in Varnum v Brien made it crystal clear that religious institutions will not be affected in any way. They are allowed to marry or not marry just as they were before. This decision affects civil marriage alone, and those tax paying, job creating, freedom defending couples deserve the same rights as you, me and my lovely little bride-to-be.

I know you will be under considerable pressure from your caucus and groups like the Family Leader but they are on the wrong side of history. You and I are relatively close in age. You see the difference in opinion on this issue between age groups. Our generation overwhelmingly rejects discrimination based on sexual orientation. Please stand with us. Do not give in to those who want Biblical law put into the Iowa Constitution.

Please let me know if you want to discuss this further. I greatly appreciate your time.
